Welcome to the first instalment of Becoming A Podcast Person, where I train myself to find my groove and become a regular listener, one pod at a time.
Over the years, I've tried so hard to find shows that stick, with only a handful of successes -- Serial Season One (duh), S-Town, Missing Richard Simmons. My attention either dwindled for the others, or I simply couldn't find the time to work a podcast into my schedule.
You should know, I'm incapable of simultaneously paying attention to people talk and, well, doing almost anything else. Even at this very moment, I'm trying (and failing) to listen to a podcast while I type. My brain wants to focus on both, but separately, so it ends up doing neither.
The only things I actually CAN do while listening to a podcast are: take a shower, cook, walk the dog. Given my current state of locked down joblessness, I figure it's the perfect time to devote myself to finding shows I can really get into and enjoy.
First up, I present Forever 35 :)
The tagline sums up their tone perfectly: A podcast about the things we do to take care of ourselves. If you're in the market for a show about friendship and wellness, then you might really love this one.
Forever 35 has a very loyal, ride-or-die fanbase. And for good reason: The hosts, Doree and Kate, are absolutely delightful! Spending an hour with them passes in a flash. They chat about everything from face masks to mental health to online cooking classes. Basically, the content is very much up my alley.
At a time when we're staying socially distant from loved ones, Kate and Doree's fun, friendly vibe is such a welcome addition to my routine. The show is usually super light, sweet, and funny. But even when things get heavier (they won't shy away from tough topics), their approach is fair and considerate.
Their fans say it often and I'm inclined to agree: Listen to enough episodes and it starts feeling like they are your friends.
How cute are they! |
Whether Kate and Doree are interviewing a guest, responding to feedback from listeners, or just shooting the shit together, I am always genuinely inspired by their warmth, thoughtfulness, and kind attitude. Plus, they give really awesome advice and suggestions -- beauty product related or otherwise!
These women have great chemistry and are both really insightful. Sometimes their opinions diverge, which I find only lends a more rounded perspective to whatever it is they're discussing.
I've kept up with the podcast for the last five weeks (!!!). It's been fun to follow a conversational show like Forever 35 (instead of more narrative-based, investigative, crime-related content). I'm starting to notice call-backs to discussions from earlier episodes. Being able to pick up on that feels like a personal achievement -- maybe I've become an avid follower!
They recently had two really notable interviews: one with Jen Gotch, the other with Madeleine Albright. Very different vibes, super interesting in their own ways. If you're looking for somewhere to start, give those a listen, or try any of their mini episodes :)

Are you a Podcast Person? Which shows do you follow regularly? Are there any you'd recommend to a novice listener? I'm all ears!
