Breaking Up With A TV Show

Following a TV series is a lot like being in a relationship. You have date nights. You are committed to a shared journey. Time and energy are invested in your connection. Some days are better than others but, generally, you have a good time together.

And just like with people, sometimes you need to call it quits.

For me, a TV break-up is usually prompted by one of three dealbreakers.

IT'S NOT YOU, IT'S ME

Compatibility is key. You might not click with everyone's favorite show, even if you really *want* to like it.

The Crown: Period pieces and costume dramas are normally MY JAM, so I'm not sure why this one couldn't stick. Too slow? Too boring? Too... British? Anyway, I made it deep into Season One before saying goodbye (or toodle loo, I guess).
Stranger Things: I wanted to be swept away like everyone else, but by Season Two, I couldn't force it anymore and had to jump ship.
Westworld: People adamantly insist I give this show another shot. Please. Ten minutes into the first episode and someone is getting raped? I'll pass on the rest.

EMOTIONAL PUNCHING BAG

There's enough turmoil in the world. I don't need recreational trauma, thanks.

Handmaid's Tale: I loved the first season, despite the unrelenting emotional abuse it inflicted. There was always one moment (at least!) in every episode that would completely break me. It gave me nightmares! Not exactly strong foundation for a healthy partnership. Eventually, I accepted that it was time to part ways.
I Know This Much Is True: Bleak AF and super, super depressing. (I don't use the d-word lightly.) The reviews are great, but after watching Episode One, I felt way too gutted to continue.

THE SPARK IS GONE

Some relationships simply run their course. Absolutely zero hard feelings here.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Season One is some of my favorite television content of all time. I happily and excitedly chugged along through Season Two, but could already sense my devotion waning. I plan to watch the latest episodes some day. For right now, I've totally ghosted.
Modern Family: This show was so cute in its early seasons! However, with time, the gags gradually became less genuine and funny, way more self aware and cartoonish and, well, dumb. (Sorry!) It hurts to say goodbye, but sometimes you just grow apart.

Have you ever broken up with a TV show?
