Summer is around the corner. Temps are already climbing northward of 20 degrees. Everyone is pumped to FINALLY spend time in the sunshine, pets included!
Wanted to share the things we do, come summertime, to keep Reggie safe in the heat. (He would happily roast in the sun for HOURS if we let him.) Keep in mind, these are tips that work for us, so just double-check they're suitable for your dog too :)
Just like Where's Waldo, but with a Boston Terrier. |
Outside
1. Before going for a walk, touch the sidewalk or pavement. Keep your hand there for at least five seconds. If you can't, then it's too hot out for your pup, and you even risk burning his paws.
2. On really sunny days, do your best to stay in the shade and take short breaks, even when the ground is cool enough for a walk.
3. Get a portable water bottle. This was revolutionary for us! Fill it before you leave home, empty and air-dry it when you get back. Collapsible bowls are lighter to carry, but you could get stuck searching for water when your dog is ready for a drink. The bottle we use is similar to this model. Kong makes a very good-looking option, too. Reggie might need an upgrade ;)
4. Avoid peak heat hours. Sounds obvious, right? It's a drag staying indoors when the day is at its sunniest, but doing so is totally crucial to your pup's well-being.
Sometimes we can coax him into the shade. He'll almost always choose the dirtiest corner. |
At home
1. Hydration! Read up on how much water your breed needs (too much can cause problems) or consult with a vet. Reggie can be sooo stubborn and will basically refuse to drink sometimes. When that happens, I toss a few pieces of food into his water bowl, and he slurps up water as he eats. Love it when I outsmart him (it doesn't happen often lol).
2. For extra relief from the heat, consider getting your dog a cooling mat. (We have this one.) I like to fold it up in a clean plastic bag, then leave it in the fridge to get really cold. Not the most sophisticated or longterm solution, but it helps :) especially if you don't have A/C.
