What I Watched: May 2020

Welcome back! Here's a rundown of what I've watched this past month, if you're looking for something new to stream.

Like last time, I'll put a * beside titles I think people should check out. I'll also start linking back to Rotten Tomatoes, just to give easier access to more info about the movie/show.

Movies

The Assistant: And I thought some of MY colleagues were awful. Yikes.
The Birdcage: THE MOVIE HOLDS UP :) I worried it would feel outdated or (way worse) cartoonishly offensive. Instead, it was sweet and tender in ways I wasn't expecting. Also, the movie is hysterically funny! Over-the-top and outlandish, sure, but it never makes fun of the main characters. Honestly, the only downside is the son, Val -- a whiny, ungrateful, rude little turd lol.
The Goldfinch: I love a good book adaptation. This one is... Alright. Was honestly expecting worse (the reviews are decimating) and am happy to report it's not as bad as people say. The book just set a high bar that the movie doesn't really reach.
Gosford Park (rewatch): This could be my favorite whodunnit ever. I've seen it SO many times and still get really into it. Perfect for fans of Downton Abbey. Or Clive Owen ;)
Insomnia: Interesting take on an otherwise ordinary murder investigation. Loses points because the victim is a dead girl. (Isn't it always?)
Minority Report: I liked wading the waters of moral ambiguity. The precogs are fucking creepy, though.
Perfect Strangers (Perfetti Sconosciuti): Interesting concept -- over dinner, a group of friends all leave their cellphones on the table, and every text/email/call is shared aloud. You can probably imagine where things go. It's worth a watch anyway.
Rough Night: Totally adequate for some easy, stupid entertainment. Kate McKinnon is so funny (duh).
You've Got Mail (rewatch): Cute, classic, slightly problematic rom-com. I somehow find myself watching this movie at least once a year.

TV shows

30 Rock S6: The GOAT (even if I only truly love seasons one to four).
Broad City S2-3-4: The later seasons are sillier, but I snort-choke-laugh multiple times an episode, so I'm very much still on board with this show.
Curb Your Enthusiasm S1-2-3: I have a little ritual. Wake up, walk Reggie, finish my first coffee while watching Curb. And I laugh every single morning. As a way to start the day? I'd say that's pretty pretty prettyyyy pretty good.
Dead To Me S2: At best, it honors to the vibe of Season One. At worst, it's excellent ambient noise while you scroll through your phone.
Fleabag S1-2 (rewatch): So much sadder and heavier than I remembered. The show is seriously good and all those awards are very much deserved! Just don't let the first five minutes turn you off, especially if you're a little prudish lol.
The Handmaid's Tale S3: Ugh. Watched the first episode, had a small breakdown during the riverbank scene, remembered why I needed a break from this show. The suffering is unrelenting.
Run S1: Intense, confusing, fun. Undecided on how I really feel about this show, so I'll keep going along for the ride for now.

Regretfully, The Wire fell off the rotation. Again. Why is it so impossible for me to get into that show??

What have YOU been watching? :)
