What I Watched: April 2020

There have been record-breaking levels of TV consumption in our house recently. Since I'm fortunate enough to have loads of free time, April 2020 has basically become a month of revisiting old favorites and getting around to others that I've been meaning to see forever.

Here's what we've watched so far. Will do my best to add a micro review beside each title and will definitely put a * beside titles I strongly recommend.

Movies

Certified Copy -- Forgive the shade but this movie was so boring.
Crawl -- Fun shlock! Made me want to watch Deep Blue Sea.
Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot -- Painful, emotional true story. I couldn't get past how one-dimensional all the female characters were, and there weren't many.
Good Time -- Kind of meh, but maybe just by comparison to Uncut Gems? (Which I really liked and was made by the same guys.)
* Grey Gardens -- LEGENDARY. Was long overdue to rewatch and extremely happy to report the doc still holds up.
The Graduate -- I don't believe in watching something just because it's "classic" or "important." That's annoying. I genuinely like this movie because it's funny and weird.
Hors de Prix -- Cute! Would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for chick-flick-y escapism and a super cushy, idealized story about sex workers (à la Pretty Woman).
* In The Loop -- Might be in my top ten fave movies ever. You don't need be into political humor (I'm not) to love this movie. It's hilarious, wordy, just the best. And it's like a new movie every time you watch it, because you always catch jokes you missed last time.
The Invisible Man (remake) -- Keep in mind that my threshold for suspense/horror is tiny. That being said, this movie was so scary!
Rear Window -- Different type of lockdown. James Stewart is kind of a dick, but Grace Kelly and the nurse are great.
Train to Busan -- Really good (if you're into zombies).
* Queen & Slim -- Heavy, heartbreaking, beautifully told story about a slice of American reality. You are rooting for the main characters, then you take a step back to remember that versions of this actually happen in real life with disturbing, infuriating regularity. Some moments are hard to watch, but every minute is worth your time.

TV

Watched these shows/seasons for the first time and would honestly recommend every single one!

30 Rock (season six)
* Broad City (season one)
Curb Your Enthusiasm (season six, then circling back to season one)
My Brilliant Friend (season two) -- Terrific if you love the books, probably uninteresting otherwise.
* Watchmen (season one)
The Wire (season one) -- Finally, right?

Broad City is my favorite show right now, no contest. Abbi and Ilana make me cackle and cry from laughing so hard. On the flip side, if you're looking for something intense and moody, give Watchmen a shot. It's not super comic book-y, in case that's a dealbreaker.

Unorthodox is on the list for next month -- people keep saying it's fantastic. I was also really looking forward to seeing Promising Young Woman in theatres (in a pre-quarantine world). Hoping it'll be released online instead.

Did I miss any great movies or shows? Is there a favorite of yours that should be on my list? Always love to hear about what everyone else is watching :)
