Will I ever stop calling autumnal apparel "back-to-school clothes"? Unlikely.
You can breathe easy, though. It's still not that time of year! There's no way anyone can rush me through our long-awaited, never-long-enough summer in Montreal, and anyway, I'm not someone who looks forward to Pumpkin Spice Season. What I do get excited about, though, is shopping for new clothes lol. Stores are starting to roll out their cooler weather merch and I can't stop myself from (virtual) browsing.
Considering the insidious nature of this ongoing pandemic, the outlook on fall is still hazy. Will people even need new clothes, or just new pyjamas for working at home? It feels like my future is being mapped out by a Magic 8-Ball. Luckily, the things that really catch my eye lately are gorgeous, really well-made staple pieces that look timeless and can update my existing wardrobe.
Scroll on down if you'd like to see what I'm swooning over :)
THE OVER-SHIRT
Not quite true outerwear, an over-shirt is something between a top and a jacket. The trend emerged last year, but when I was finally ready to pull the trigger and get one for myself, the season was over. I don't want to make the same mistake this year. The Ganna jacket from Aritzia is kind of perfect -- good shape, seemingly heavy fabric, large tortoiseshell buttons. Plaid and printed varieties are super cute, but I prefer the subtleness and versatility of getting a solid. Love their taupe-y color, but will likely choose a true khaki or dark olive instead, if Aritzia's releases those shades later on.
BALLOON JEANS
Good lord, do I love high-waisted, roomy denim! For close to a decade, I was strictly a skinny jeans person, and maybe I'll reconvert in the future. For now, I'm all about that non-clingy life. Levi's Balloon Fit jeans remind of my favorite Le Petit denim from Zara, but with a more desirable wider leg opening, better fabric quality, and thoughtful construction. Make no mistake: I'm still a Wedgie Fit fan (and will likely buy 1-2 more pairs come fall), but it's nice to have another silhouette in the arsenal, to switch things up.
CHUNKY OXFORDS
Maguire's new Zava oxford in white (but with black laces) is a dream for transitioning from summer to fall. When it gets colder, they'll still look cool paired back to black tights and a sweater/skirt combo. But honestly? Give me any excuse to buy a new pair of Maguire shoes and I'll do it. I LIVE in their black leather bow-decked loafers; I have these mules in two colors and they were my favorite shoe for work trips. (Maybe post-pandemic airports will let us keep our shoes on?) Their footwear is cute, creative, and impeccably made. You won't find better value for the price, either!
Are you eyeing any special pieces for back-to-school? I'd love to hear about it :)
